Be My Baby
(Part 3 in the 'Judith Kaufmann Series')

   "I have the results from the tests we ran, Rosey," Doctor Elliott informed her.

   Rosey Malone was sitting in a char in the partitioned part of the free clinic. She was the daughter of former syndicate boss Frank Malone. Frank and Rosey and fled to Mexico after Frank had given evidence regarding syndicate activities. In public, he had pleaded 'The Fifth', and had informed the press he was getting too old

   Rosey and her father had settled about two months earlier in a small village in the Sierra Madre Mountains about 150 miles south of Tijauna. The place was called San Pueblo.

   During the time that Frank Malone had been subpoenaed, Los Angeles Police Department, Detective David Starsky had met Rosey using the pretense that he needed information on her father. During the whirlwind two days they were together, Rosey and David had fallen in love. They had spent one night together.

   Rosey had not been feeling very well the past week or so. She had noticed she had been overtired for about a month. She had also noticed she had gained a few pounds. She had concluded it was due to the stress of suddenly. Moving from Los Angeles to San Pueblo, in the manner in which they did, Rosey was convinced that was the reasons for her illness.

   However, just to be sure everything was okay, she went to the free clinic to have a complete physical examination done.

   The part of Mexico that the Malones had settled in was a very remote place. The people there lived under the worst conditions possible. They had no food, no clean drinking water, no new clothing.

   When Rosey had lived in Los Angeles, she ran a galleria in which she sold many of the arts and crafts that the people had made. All of the money went to help they build a better life.

   "Okay, Doctor Elliott, give it to me straight, is anything really wrong with me?" Rosey asked.

   "Nothing really series, except the fact that you are pregnant," she answered.

   "What?"

   "You are going to have a baby, Rosey."

   Rosey looked at the doctor with a blank look on her face.

   "You are about 2 1/2 months pregnant."

   "Really?"

   "Rosey, I realize this has come as a shock to you. If you need anything, let me know. We are here for you. I know there are some heavy decisions that are going to have to be made. Under the circumstances, I would suggest you take your time."

   "Thank you, Doctor Elliott."

   "In the meantime, Rosey, I would suggest that you read these brochures and start to take these vitamins. These are the same ones I give to all the women who come in here and find out they are pregnant."

   Rosey left the clinic clutching the things that Doctor Elliott had given her. She thought to herself, " I am gonna have a baby. What next?"

   Many things started to go through her mind. She started to think of the options she had for herself. She could probably go to Mexico City and have an abortion. She was sure there were lots of clinics that would do the job quickly and secretly. She could always raise the baby herself. She could always go back to Los Angeles and tell David Starsky that she was expecting. She knew he did have a right to know. She could always put the baby up for adoption.

   One thing was for sure, she needed to tell her father. All sorts of thoughts started to enter her mind because of that. She remembered the day that her father found out that David was a cop. He had specifically said, "I want that cop out of our lives."

   Rosey knew she would eventually have to tell her father about her pregnancy.

   When she got home, she decided that maybe she should tell him right away. There was no use putting it off.

   "Daddy, I have something I need to tell you." It was lunch time and she was making lunch. Her father was getting himself a glass of iced tea out of the fridge. "I went to the doctor today and I am expecting a baby."

   "Really? And just who is the father?"

   "The only man I have ever really loved - David Starsky."

   He father almost choked on his iced tea. "That cop?"

   "Yes, Daddy."

   "And what do you plan to do about this baby?"

   "I'm going to keep it. I am not going to give it up for adoption and I refuse to be have an abortion."

   "Are you going to tell him about it?'

   "Maybe after the baby is born."

   "Yeah, well I guess you are old enough to make your own decisions."

   It was a lovely evening in Los Angeles when Rosey Malone arrived. It had taken her most of the afternoon to drive from San Pueblo. The baby was asleep in her car seat. Rosey immediately drove by Metro Headquarters. She decided to see if David Starsky was still there.

   She could not have arrived at a better time. She noticed the Striped Tomato was just pulling out of its spot in front of the building. So she decided to follow him. David was just heading towards The Pits -- Huggy Bear's establishment. When David got there, he found a spot and parked the car. She pulled up beside him and waited a few minutes before getting out of the car. She also noticed that Hutch was there and he was there with a woman. She waited a few minutes and then she got out of the car. She got Diana out of her car seat and brought her into the place with her.

   She opened the door to the establishment and looked around for the party of three. She found them and she decided to wait a little while before she approached them. She was thirsty from her long trip and she decided to order a coke. She kept her eyes on the table all the time.

   David, who made it a habit of watching the door, leaned over to Hutch, "see that lady over there?"

   "Of course, Starsk."

   "She looks familiar"

   "Well, Starsky, don't just sit here. Go over and talk to her."

   "Yeah, Hutch."

   David got up and went over to her. "Pardon me, but don't I know you from somewhere?"

   "That is an original line. Do you remember me? I am Rosey Malone."

   "Rosey Malone? What are you doing here?"

   She stood up and he took her in his arms.

   "Is there any place where we can be alone?"

   "How about my place?"

   "Sounds like a plan."

   "How did you get here?"

   "I drove. I have my own car."

   "Okay. I am going to say good-bye to Hutch and Judith."

   "Okay."

   Rosey finished her coke. David came back and took her hand. "Just follow me, okay?"

   He gave her his patented grin.

   Once they were at David's house, he offered her something to drink. "Coke would be nice." After he had gotten her a coke and he got himself a beer, he asked, "Rosey, what are you doing back in town?"

   "Because I wish to tell you I still love you and want to show you your child,"

   "Is this my child?"

   "David, yes it is."

   "How come you didn't tell me about her before?"

   "Because I wasn't sure whether or not you wanted children."

   "Rosey, I love children. Remember when you left for Mexico and I told you about the fairy tale?"

   "Yes."

   "Well, it was true. I was hoping you would stay in Los Angeles and we would get married and have a couple of kids."

   "Well, David, this child is yours. I guess we got things backwards."

   "Rosey, how old is the baby?"

   "About a month old. I had some complications after she was born and I waited until she was out of danger."

   "Okay."

   "Can I hold her?"

   "Of course." She lifted the baby out of the basket and handed her to David. "You have to support her head." She looked at David and he had tears in his eyes.

   "So what do you and Judith have planned for tonight?" David asked Hutch the next day at work.

   "Nothing. What did you have in mind?"

   "How about some dinner?"

   "Yeah, why don't we just meet at my place and order something?"

   "Hey, that sounds good."

   "Okay, I'll call Judith and you can call Rosey. We can just meet at my place for dinner and whenever everyone gets there."

   It was around 8 p.m. by the time everyone got there. David picked up Rosey and the baby at his place and after he had showered and changed, they headed to Hutch's place.

   David was carrying Diana as they entered the house. Judi had already arrived when they got there. "Want to see the latest member of my family?" David asked after everyone was settled in their places. He had a big grin on his face.

   Both Judith and Hutch said sure in unison. They both got up and went over to look at her over David's shoulders. She was sleeping contentedly in her Daddy's arms. David looked up at Hutch who gave him a wink of approval. "Hey, Princess, say hi to your Uncle Hutch and Aunt Judith." He gave his daughter a kiss on the forehead.

   "So how old is the baby?" Judi asked after she and Hutch had sat back down in their places.

   "She is almost five weeks old."

   "Rosey, she is so beautiful?"

   "Thanks. I think she looks a lot like her father." Rosey looked directly at David who mouthed "I love you." She smiled a sly smile at him. He gave her a loving wink that just melted her heart.

   "Rosey, I hope we can become good friends. We will probably be spending a lot of time together because the guys are such good friends. It will be nice to have another female."

   "Judi, that sounds great."

   "Hey, what would you guys like for dinner," Hutch asked.

   "Yeah, I am starved," David chimed in.

   Judi laughed, "you're always hungry."

   "How about pizza," Hutch suggested.

   "I love pizza. That was one thing I missed in Mexico, no great pizza places."

   "Starsky would go nuts without a pizza take-out place on every corner." Hutch said with a sly grin.

   David just glared at him and stuck his tongue out at Hutch.

   "Okay, pizza it is."

   The adults discussed what they wanted on their pizza, and they ordered it. While they waited for the pizza, Diana started to cry. Rosey looked at her watch, "Ooops, it is feeding time." David handed the baby to her. "If breast feeding offends anyone, I could leave the room."

   Hutch said, "No, not at all."

   Judi said, "No, where I work, we encourage breast feeding."

   David just looked at her with his violet eyes. "Not me, Rosey, you look so beautiful with the baby."

   "Thank you, David. Could you please go into the diaper bag and give me the receiving blanket I brought, I would appreciate it."

   "Rosey, if you want to be more comfortable, you can sit in the chair and I can take the couch." Hutch suggested.

   "Thanks, Hutch." She switched places with him. David gave her the receiving blanket and she put it around the baby as she fed her. As soon as she was finished, the pizza arrived. David offered to burp Diana. When David was finished, Rosey mentioned it was probably changing time. David offered to change her. "David, you are so sweet."

   "Well, you get her all day and I only get her at night."

   "Okay, David."

   Everyone dug into the pizza. David decided he could not put the baby down and he held her while he tried to eat his pizza. Hr was just so much in love with the newest member of his family that he couldn't bear to be without her.

   After the pizza was finished, Judi asked Rosey, "Do you have a doctor here in town?"

   "No why?"

   "Well, because when the baby is six weeks old, didn't your doctor tell you to bring her in for a check-up, and also to make sure that you are doing okay?"

   "Yes."

   "Well, if you need a doctor, you can come to my clinic and I will do the follow-up for you."

   "Hey, that would be great. I would really appreciate it."

   "Give me the name of your doctor in Mexico and I can send away for your records."

   "Sounds good to me."

   Rosey wrote down the name and address of the clinic in Mexico.

   "Well, Rosey, I got the results of your tests," Judi said. They were sitting in the examination room in Judi's clinic. "Everything is fine. The stitches are healing nicely. Diana is in perfect health. I would say that you and David can resume sexual relations whenever you want to. But I would recommend some type of birth control. If you need any pamphlets on the latest methods, please ask the receptionist on your way out."

   "Thanks, Judi."

   "Rosey, if you need anything, let me know. As I told you last week, the night we met. I hope we can be come friends. Anything you tell me is in complete confidentiality."

   "Great, Judi."

   "Okay, I would like to see you in a month's time."

   "Sure."

   "By that time, your records will probably be here from Mexico and we can take it from there. Did you have a doctor when you lived in town?"

   "Yes, I did."

   "Do you mind if I contact him or her?"

   "Nope."

   "Okay, sign this form and we can get your records and have them in one spot, okay?"

   "Rosey, what are you doing here?" Rosey had left the clinic with the baby and headed over to headquarters to tell David the good news. Our favorite detectives were in the office, just catching up on some paperwork. David rose from his desk and came over to Rosey who was at the door.

   "I couldn't wait to tell you. I just came from the clinic."

   "Yes, what is it, Honey," David said as he took her in his arms.

   "Both Diana and I have a clean bill of health."

   "Hey, that's terrific. This calls for a celebration." He pulled her in for a quick kiss.

   Hutch, who had been sitting at his desk, rose and commented, "Hey, come on you two, Cut that out, that is how Diana came along?"

   "Settle down, Hutch." David said when he came up for air. "I can't tell you to get your own girl because you already have one." He turned to Rosey and said, "My lovely lady, go home and get all dolled up and we are going out to celebrate."

   "David, that sounds great."

   "How about that Mexican restaurant where we went on our first date?"

   "David, I love that idea."

   "Yes, the best tostados this side of Guadalajara."

   "Yeah."

   "So have the baby ready when I get home and we will just take her with us."

   "David."

   "Congrats, again, Rosey."

   "Thanks Hutch." She looked at David, "Well I had better get going."

   "See you later, Rosey." Hutch said.

   David took the baby out of her arms. He held her for a few minutes and then gave her back to Rosey. "Bye, my little baby," he said as he gave her a kiss on the forehead. "Bye, my lovely lady, " he said to her as he gave her a quick kiss. "See you later. I love you."

   "Bye David, I love you too."

   "Rosey, I have something I want to say to you."

   "David..."

   David and Rosey were enjoying dinner at the Mexican restaurant. They were fortunate enough to get the same booth that they had gotten on their first date. The baby was sitting in her baby chair at the table. She had already been fed and she was sleeping contentedly.

   "You know, now that you have a clean bill of health, you have the green light to resume sexual relations."

   "Yes, David."

   "There is one thing I want to tell you." He started to stroke her hair. "I love you and I want to make love to you as your husband."

   "David, are you saying what I think you are saying?"

   "Yes, Rosey." He reached in his jacket pocket and pulled out a small jewelry box. He opened it up, cleared his throat and said, "Rosey, will you marry me?"

   With tears in her eyes, she said, "Yes, David."

   He pulled the ring out of the box and took her left hand, "Let's see if it fits." He slipped it on her ring finger.

   She looked at it and said, "David, it is a lovely ring."

   "The guy at the jewelry store told me if it did not fit or if you did not like it, to bring it back."

   "No, David, I want this one."

   "Honey, I wanted to talk to you about this, but I thought we could get married in a couple of weeks, on the first anniversary of our meeting."

   "Sounds great, David."

   "We are going to need blood tests. But I can just go to Judi's clinic because all your records are there."

   "David, that is perfect."

   "I have also decided I want Diana to have my name, instead of Malone. I want my two girls to be Starskys."

   "David, I like that idea."

   "Hey, aren't you going to give me a kiss or anything." David gave her a little boy pout.

   "Of course, David Starsky." She leaned over and kissed him on the lips. "I love you, David Starsky."

   "I love you too, Rosey Malone, soon to be Rosey Starsky." He kissed her back.

   David came home from work the next evening at his usual time, when he did not have to work late. He shut the door and noticed all of Rosey's suitcases were packed and by the front door. "Rosey, Rosey, are you home?"

   "Yes, David, " she said as she came out of the bedroom.

   His hear stopped for a moment as he asked the question she knew he would be asking. "Honey, what is the meaning of this?"

   "David, " she said with a lump in her throat, "David, I am moving out."

   He rushed over to her and buried his head in her hair, "Rosey, please don't leave me without telling me why."

   "David, please listen to me."

   "Honey, if it's something I did, please tell me and I'll apologize."

   "David, it is nothing you did."

   "Sweetheart, then, if it is something I said, please tell me, and I will try to make it right."

   "David, it is nothing you said."

   "My lovely lady, please tell me. I need to know."

   She looked into his violet blue eyes, and saw they were filled with tears, "David, I have to leave. We agreed to not have sexual relations again until our wedding night. I want that night to be special. I can't stay here because of the sexual tension between us. I can't stand being here, being near you, wanting to touch you so much and have you make love to me when we agreed to wait."

   "Rosey, don't leave me,"

   "David, I am not leaving you. I cannot live with you under the circumstances."

   "Honey, I can't live without you."

   "David, I am not leaving you. I am only going to live over Judi's place until after the wedding. It is only going to be for a few weeks. We will be together every night until bedtime. But I am not going to sleep here until I become Mrs. Starsky."

   "Rosey, stay with me this evening. When you want to head to Judi's, we can go together."

   She gave him a hug and told him," David, I'll stay this evening "

   She wiped the tears from his eyes. He gave her his patented grin. "Okay."

   "Let's make dinner together and then we can just spend a quiet evening together and then I will head over to Judi's place."

   "Come here. I'll be a good boy. But Rosey, I want you so much. I don't think I can wait until our wedding night. It is taking all of my willpower now not to sweep you up in my arms, take you into the bedroom, tear off all your clothes and make love to you."

   "David, hold that thought."

   "I will."

   They spent that evening together. They made dinner together, ate by candlelight and spent the rest of the evening talking about their wedding day and making some plans about what they wanted.

   "Waaaaaahhhh." All of a sudden Rosey woke up. It took her a moment to remember what day it was -- her wedding day. It was time to get up and feed one hungry infant. She looked at the alarm clock - 7 a.m.

   The sleeping person beside her woke up. "Hey, Rosey. Happy Wedding Day."

   "Thank you, Judi."

   Rosey got up and got the baby out of her carriage. "Good morning, Sweetheart." She kissed her daughter on the forehead. She went into the living room and sat in the chair and fed her baby. Judi got up and went into the living room "Take a shower and I will start breakfast. and coffee and maybe we can do something about your hair."

   "Sounds good."

   Rosey finished feeding Diana and went into the bedroom, got her stuff and took a shower. Judi took care of the baby while Rosey took her shower.

   Meanwhile over at Hutch's place, the alarm went off. David looked at the clock. 7 a.m. Another five minutes. He woke up from another sexual dream of him and Rosey. Another couple of hours and I can do all the things I have been wanting to do with her for the last little while.

   The person on the other side of the bed stirred, "Good morning, Starsk. Happy Wedding Day." Hutch said.

   "Thanks, Hutch."

   "Since this is your day, you can have first dibs at the shower, if you want. I will make breakfast."

   "Thanks, Hutch." David rose from the bed.

   "There are towels in the linen closet."

   "Hutch, please no goats milk, or sea kelp or wheat germ, or any of that other stuff."

   "Don't worry, Starsky. I thought since this is your day, I found some three-day old burritos." David looked at Hutch with a stunned look on his face. Hutch laughed, "Come on, loosen up, Starsk.."

   "Yeah."

   "I know that you nervous."

   "How could you guess?"

   "Well, it is not every day that my best friend gets married."

   "Yeah."

   "Well, I am just as nervous as you are."

   "Really?"

   "Sure am. After all another bachelor bites the dust."

   David gave Hutch his patented grin. "Yeah, I know."

   "But Rosey is a great girl. She is good for you. You have a beautiful daughter, too."

   "Yeah, I know."

   It was several hours later, 9 a.m. As the clock in the city hall tower outside struck 9 a.m., two sets of adults arrived at the door.

   Judi was dressed in a very lovely peach colored dressed with a matching long sleeved jacket. Rosey had chosen a very flattering ivory colored suit with a long sleeved jacket and a mid-calf skirt. When she saw her fiancé, David, her heart skipped a beat. He was wearing a very flattering blue three-piece suit, which made him look sensational. Hutch had chosen a medium blue suit, which showed off his baby blue eyes and blonde hair very nicely.

   The youngest member of the Starsky family, Diana, was dressed in a cute little baby blue dress that her mother had bought especially for the occasion.

   When David saw Rosey, he went over to her, held her in his arms and talked into her hair, "Rosey, I missed you so much. You look terrific." He kissed her passionately as if there was no tomorrow.

   When they came up for air, Hutch commented, "Okay, you two, time for that will be later. Let's get this over with. "Rosey started to giggle. David just stuck his tongue out at Hutch and went back to kissing Rosey. Hutch just stood there, tapping his foot, humming a tune, looking at this watch. Judi giggled.

   Finally David, who was only doing this to get Hutch going, and was just an anxious to marry Rosey as he knew everyone else was, came up for air. He gave Rosey a wink and took her hand, "Come on, Rosey, let's make this legal." He went over to Judi, who had been holding the baby and took from her. "My baby." He gave her a kiss on the forehead. "I missed my Little Sunshine." She was awake and when she saw his big patented grin, she started to smile.

   Rosey looked into his eyes and said, "She knows a good thing when she sees it."

   Once they were in the car and headed towards David's house, he turned into the first street into a strip mall. "Alone at last," he said as he pulled her in for a quick and passionate kiss. "I missed you."

   "I missed you too."

   He started the car again and started off. During the ride home, they held hands. At every red light, he put her hand up to his lips and kissed it. At every few intersections, he looked at her and mouthed, "I love you."

   David opened the door to their apartment. He swept her off her feet in his arms and carried her over the threshold. He helped her bring in all of her suitcases.    

   "Welcome back, Mrs. Starsky," he said as he closed the door and took her in his arms.

   "Thank you, Mr. Starsky." she said as she saw a deep love and a deep yearning for her in his deep blue eyes.

   "Alone at last," he said as he drew her in for a deep, passionate kiss.

   "Yeah, what do you want to do now, David," she asked innocently."

   "Well, I can think of a few things," he whispered in her ear. He took her by the hand and led her to the bedroom.

   "Show me, David, show me," she begged him.

   He put his fingers up to her mouth. "ssshhhh" He took his hand from her mouth and replaced it with his mouth. They kissed deeply. His tongue began to find her mouth. She parted her lips and began to probe deeply into his mouth with her tongue. She had always remembered how good he tasted, how he smelled and how he looked.

   She smiled as she said to him, "You used peppermint toothpaste, didn't you?

   "How did you know?"

   "You taste as good as you look. David, I never told you this before, either, but you smell so good too."

   "Why? Thank you/"

   His hands found her blouse and he began to unbutton each one of the buttons. After he unbuttoned a button, he kissed her newly exposed skin. She began to moan with pleasure. He helped her to get out of her blouse after he had undone all the buttons.

   She did the same to her husband. After he had removed his jacket and tie, and started a pile of clothes on the floor, she started to unbutton his shirt, kissing each part of his newly exposed piece of skin also.

   When Rosey has finished that part of her task, it was his turn again. He unzipped her skirt and it fell to the floor. She stood before her new husband wearing a light green see-through teddy, which showed everything. "Do you like it, David?''

   He looked at her with eyes wide open. His jaw dropped. "Hey, what can I say? I love it." He took the spaghetti straps and gently moved them down. He helped her out of it. It fell to the bed and she added it to the pile of clothes on the floor.

   She unzipped his pants and helped him to remove his shorts. They added them to the pile.

   "Rosey, you are just as beautiful as I remember you were." She put her fingers up to his mouth, 'Shhhhh."

   He gave her his patented grin. His hands started to roam and he kissed her all over. He continued to play with her, kissing her smooth and flat stomach and doing all the things he had thought of doing to her for the past year - the ten months she was gone and the last few weeks since she returned.

   In the afterglow of their lovemaking Rosey started to cry.

   "Honey, what is the matter? I thought you were happy."

   "I am happy."

   They spend the rest of the afternoon and on into the evening making love.

   They picked up the baby the next morning at Judi's house. David and Rosey had not really planned a honeymoon. David had booked the whole week off work and they just spent the week quietly together, enjoying being married and getting used to each other. David was glad to have his girls back in his life and in his house.
